Description

La Galigo was built by traditional Southern Sulawesi craftsmen in Bira in 2012. She is a traditional two mast style sailboat, which the local tribes of Bugis heritage refer to as a ‘Phinisi’. The Bugis are thought to have been inspired by old Dutch Clipper sailing vessels which may have been deserted during the days of Dutch exploration, and with an abundance of tropical hard woods in their land, have been producing these types of boats for hundreds of years. The hull of La Galigo has been constructed from what is known locally as ‘Kayu Besi’ which translates as ‘Iron Wood’. All interiors and the remainder of the vessel have been thoughtfully finished in tropical teak, with a combined weight of over 169 gross tons.

La Galigo was designed and project managed by an avid liveaboard diver with comforts and practicality in mind, and to this day, we are one of the only wooden liveaboards with a dedicated dive platform located at the rear of the vessel. Motor and generator noise have been engineered out by isolating the engine room away from rooms with thick soundproofing, which even though not silent, makes for a better night’s sleep. All cabins are fitted with en-suite facilities and are filled with plentiful natural light and spectacular views of the passing seas and islands.

Lower Deck. Our roomy lower deck cabins feature an American style deep sprung double mattress. 2 of the cabins remain doubles, 2 can be converted to twin beds. Every room has its own private en-suite with hot fresh water showers, climate control, and a desk for filling out your logbook after a fantastic day diving.

Main Deck. The main floor is the spacious living and diving area. The back area of the boat is our broad dive deck with twin curved stair cases. A well equipped preparation deck is next up from this with ample space to kit up into your gear with out the hassles of a crowded dive boat. The homey lounge area towards the vessels center gives our new friends a perfect place to trade stories about the days diving and download brilliant photographs of your day.

This space has many power points for charging and preparing your laptop, camera and video equipment. This space also has a large TV and a well stocked bookcase for your entertainment. This is also the place to enjoy the delicious creations that our Head Chef has been working hard on while you where marveling at this unique underwater world.

Upper Deck. The upper floor is where you discover the first of our outdoor living areas, the two master cabins, and the grand suite. In the outdoor living area, you can lounge back in a comfortable reclining chair with ample shade and tranquil ocean breeze, a great way to unwind after another mind-blowing dive.

The next tier master cabins are more spacious and offer a choice of a double bed or twin beds, refreshing air conditioning and an even more spectacular panoramic view from your window.

*We require all guests embarking on a charter with us to have a minimum of 50 dives within the past 5 years with an open water certification or 20 dives with an advanced open water certification. We accept certifications from relevant international agencies such as PADI, NAUI, SSI, BSAC. You will be requested to provide details from your dive card upon booking, if we cannot find your details online from your certifying agency, a photocopy or scan of the card will be requested. If it is not possible for you to send us a copy, it will be requested that you bring your card with you. Please present your card on the day of the charter to the Cruise Director.

*Due to our remote location a Dive Insurance policy is mandatory to dive with us. In our experience, DAN gives a very good service and coverage. This policy must include a medical evacuation.

There are no nearby decompression chamber facilities in Papua. The closest chamber is in Manado, Northen Sulawesi, and evacuation is extremely expensive and difficult to arrange. We provide Oxygen for dive emergencies, but breathing Oxygen is insufficient treatment for Decompression Sickness.

*You may be refused diving throughout the duration of your trip if you fail to adhere to these requests.

DAN 10 day or 30 day insurance can be organised specifically for your trip, please contact us to organise this.

Our dive guides will guide the dive very conservatively and to a maximum depth of 30m, the best marine life show is in the shallower water, therefore we don’t need to spend too much time in the deep water. We do not do deco dives. It is imperative to dive conservatively. Become acquainted with your dive computer and if you have not dived recently please let us know, we offer a refresher / check dive to all our customers upon boarding as part of the schedule, so do not worry if you are the only one!

Before every dive, a member of our staff will enter the water and perform a condition check for the dive. This will ensure that we can offer you the best conditions for your dive.
